Franchise owner Scott McMorran opened his first Planet Beach location in February 2005. He divided his time between his job of 25 years in the insurance industry and running his own franchise in Hastings, Minnesota.

When Planet Beach headquarters announced its shift to the Contempo Spa model in 2007, McMorran struggled to convert from tan-only operations to automated spa services, which required new equipment purchases and more time.

If not for the corporate office’s support, McMorran said, he never could have made the switch. “Coming from the tanning environment, it’s hard to get your hands around the concept of a spa,” he says. “Planet Beach was very helpful in terms of training us to implement the spa concept.”

Planet Beach corporate checked in weekly with McMorran via telephone, webinars and Planet Beach University, the franchise’s continuing online training program for franchise owners. With his first spa’s success, he was able to open another Planet Beach, in Mankato, Minn. Since September, the Hastings location’s membership has tripled, landing it among Planet Beach’s top 10 locations for membership increases for six consecutive months.

Planet Beach corporate office supports franchise owners through weekly calls, webinars and Planet Beach University.

Planet Beach’s support team works with franchisees on training and marketing strategy from the beginning, usually several weeks or months before the spa opens. There’s always a lot of legwork, including signing a real estate lease, generating leads for pre-sales and learning the ins and outs of equipment.
